What to pack for the Everest Base Camp trek, from layers for nights below freezing to the weight limit on Lukla flights.

Weight limit

Lukla flights have a strict baggage limit. Ask us

Clothing (layers)

  • Base layers: two sets, merino or synthetic, no cotton
  • Fleece or light insulated jacket
  • Down jacket for evenings and the Kala Patthar sunrise
  • Waterproof shell jacket and trousers
  • Trekking trousers, two pairs
  • Warm hat, sun hat, buff, liner gloves and insulated gloves
  • Trekking socks, four pairs

Footwear

  • Broken-in trekking boots with ankle support
  • Light shoes or sandals for teahouse evenings

Sleeping

  • Sleeping bag rated to about −15 °C, since teahouse rooms are unheated (see the weather tables)

Health and other kit

  • Personal medicines, blister kit, sunscreen, lip balm with SPF
  • Water bottles or bladder, plus purification tablets or a filter
  • Headtorch, power bank, sunglasses with UV protection
  • Cash in Nepali rupees for the trail
